Story

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows the life of a young high school girl, Haruhi. The story is told through the point of view of Kyon, the first person to befriend Haruhi. On the first day of school, Haruhi introduces herself by announcing that she isn’t interested in ordinary humans. Instead she is interested in aliens, time travelers, and ESPers.

Haruhi tries to find a club at the school that will interest her and joins every club and organization the school offers, but quits them all. Kyon accidentally gives Haruhi the idea to start a club of her own, thus forming the SOS Brigade. Haruhi recruits members for the club and ends up with Yuki Nagato, a very quiet girl who loves to read; Mikuru Asahina, a shy and timid but beautiful girl; and Koizumi Itsuki, a mysterious transfer student.

Unknown to Suzumiya, all the members of the club but Kyon are not ordinary humans. They were all sent from their respective organization to watch Haruhi and her behavior. Each of them suspects that Haruhi is some sort of superhuman, or god even, and when she becomes bored or dissatisfied, she could destroy the world and create a new world more to her liking. The members of the brigade attempt to keep Suzumiya entertained so that this does not happen.
